Looking for a trendy piece of decor that’ll tie the room together with coziness and harmony? This stylish yin yang rug is just what you need! On this episode of In The Know: DIY, TikTok star and DIY expert, Tay BeepBoop (@taybeepboop), shows how to make the viral yin yang rug, which will provide both balance and style to your home.

Tools & Materials Used

  • Circular object for tracing, like a mixing bowl

  • Marker

Step 1: Trace Your Pattern

Start by tracing your pattern onto the back of one of the rugs. Turn one rug on its back, then fold it into quarters, marking a spot in the center of the rug. Then, add two marks to the top and bottom of the center line. Place the bowl in the center of the top half of the rug, between the top mark and center mark, then trace a circle around the bowl. Next, place the bowl between the center mark and the bottom mark, and trace another circle.

Once you have your circles, make points one bowl-length away from each circle, forming a yin yang curve (it should look like an “S”). Then, use the marker to connect the dots of the curve.

Step 2: Cut

Use the retractable utility knife to cut out the drawn pattern.

Step 3: Trace and Cut the Second Rug

Lay your two pieces from the first rug over the back of the second rug, making sure they are lined up perfectly. Then, trace the pattern of the pieces onto the second rug. Tay uses a thinner pen here instead of the thicker marker, to ensure that no ink gets on the first rug. Once the pattern is drawn, cut out the pieces.

Step 4: Combine the Pieces

Combine one half of the first rug, one half of the second rug, one circle from the first rug, and one circle from the second rug, so that it looks like a yin yang. Make sure to pick out any extra fuzz that is extending out from the bottoms of the rugs. Use single-sided seaming carpet joining tape to tape the pieces together. Once the pieces are taped together, stomp on the rug with your feet to seal the tape. Feel free to make another rug with the remaining pieces!
