An easy, hands-free way to clean and disinfect your toilet bowl brush

Our bathrooms can house a lot of different brushes. There are hairbrushes, toothbrushes, dry brushes, makeup brushes and toilet bowl brushes.

You can (and should) clean each of them but your toilet bowl brush and its holder are probably most in need of a wash. They take the plunge to clean your porcelain bowl and quite frankly, have earned a long overdue disinfecting clean.

Toilet bowl cleaning brushes aren’t supposed to last forever, so don't be afraid to bidet yours adieu.

However, if you're keeping it around a little longer, here's some good news: it's super easy to clean, and it requires very little effort. All you need are rubber gloves, bleach, disinfectant wipes and a bucket or bin.

How to clean a toilet brush

To clean your toilet bowl brush:

  1. Pour bleach into your toilet bowl and submerge the brush.

  2. Let it soak for 30 minutes.

  3. Flush and rinse the brush in the fresh water.

  4. Wipe the handle with a disinfectant wipe.

  5. Let it air dry.

Here’s another hack: sandwich the brush between the rim of the toilet bowl and the toilet seat to dry.

You can also spray the brush with a disinfectant, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide after each use to keep it clean.

To clean the brush holder:

  1. Put it in a bucket or bin in the bathtub. Depending on the size, you can clean multiple at the same time.

  2. Submerge the holder in water and add a splash of bleach.

  3. Let it soak for an hour.

  4. Rinse the holder and let it air dry before putting the brush back in.
