East Baton Rouge children will get healthy meals this summer after Louisiana joins program

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — An East Baton Rouge Schools official says Louisiana’s decision to participate in the Summer EBT program is important so families can get healthy food.

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services announced Monday, May 6 that the state would participate in the program. DCFS Secretary David Matlock said the agency had been working with federal partners and agency leaders to finalize plans.

“We have 41,000 kids that are enrolled in our school system and if 80% of them are economically disadvantaged you can see there’s a huge need just in EBR alone,” EBR Schools Chief of Human Resources Nichola Hall said.

Hall said 21% of the East Baton Rouge Parish population is food insufficient. She said data from last year showed that North Baton Rouge was 35% food insecure.

The school system has a child nutrition program giving free meals to students during the weekends, holidays and summertime. According to Hall, meals will be served for the summer from May 28 to Aug. 2.

“A meal from EBR Child Nutrition could be the only meal for the day,” Hall said.

She said students getting nutritious meals improves their ability to learn and productivity.
