Earth Day Aiken to return on April 20 with live animals and educational resources

Apr. 15—On April 20, The City of Aiken is hosting Earth Day Aiken, a festival meant to promote environmental stewardship in the community. The event will be located at Newberry Street Festival Center and will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sarah Herring, the City of Aiken's public services manager, said the community can look forward to educational exhibits, live animals, plant vendors and food trucks.

Some exhibitors include the Butterfly Monarchy Club, the Aiken Gem, Mineral and Fossil Society, the Ruth Patrick Science Eduation Center and City of Aiken Recycling. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be holding a shoe drive during the festival and will be accepting any gently used or new shoes.

There will also be two opportunities to participate in a guided walk through Hitchcock Woods. Shuttle buses for this excursion will leave from the event site, at 9:30 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. This is a first come, first served experience with limited space.

Herring said there will be kid-friendly activities as well, including face painting and a bounce house.

"It's just an opportunity for people to come together and learn more ways of protecting our planet and making sure we leave something behind for the next generations," said Herring.
