The Earrings Kate Middleton Wore to Archie’s Christening Are Causing So Much Drama

Kate Middleton's ears are reportedly at the center of some very petty drama right now. Yes, you read that correctly: her ears.

The situation goes back a few days—to baby Archie's christening on Saturday, July 6. It was a lovely celebration, and nearly all of the royal family was in attendance: Archie's parents, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry (obviously); Markle's mother, Doria Ragland; Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla; and Kate Middleton and Prince William, to name a few. From the official portraits, everyone appeared to be in good spirits. But of course, the internet can't have that.

See, some people are still stuck on the idea that there's a royal "feud" brewing among Prince William, Middleton, Markle, and Prince Harry. And they used baby Archie's christening to reignite it. First, fans accused Prince William and Middleton of looking "sour" and "pained" in the official portraits. (If the couple seems tired or annoyed at all, it's probably because they had to stand around taking stuffy photos all day. That's a frustrating task for even the closest family members.)

Now people are saying the earrings Middleton wore to the christening were somehow a dig at Markle. She picked the same pair Princess Diana wore to Prince Harry's christening in 1984, which was interpreted as a tribute to the late royal. However, some are saying that Middleton deliberately chose them to "upstage" Markle. What?

"I think Kate wanted to upstage Meghan," one person tweeted. "With all the earrings at Kate's disposal, why did she wear the one[s] that Diana wore during Harry’s christening? Personally, I would have given Meghan that earring."

Another fan wrote, "In all honesty, I think Kate was a tad bit disrespectful and spiteful. She didn't have to come there dress[ed] the way she was and sporting Princess Diana's earrings. I believe she did that intentionally to upstage Meghan's special moment."

I call B.S. on this idea.

Granted, I don't know Middleton personally, but I highly doubt she had some grand scheme to steal Markle's thunder with a pair of earrings. She didn't cackle to herself in the mirror while wearing the earrings and say, "That will show her," the way these tweets suggest. Who knows—maybe these earrings were offered to Markle first and she declined. Maybe Markle had no idea Middleton even chose to wear them. That's most likely the case. Remember, this was at her son's christening; she probably had more on her mind than how Middleton accessorized her pink dress.

This might be the silliest entry into the Middleton-Markle "feud" narrative. Don't take any stock in it—or in the idea that a feud exists at all. Katie Nicholl, a royals expert, dispelled this myth to Glamour a few months back: "I think this idea of there being a catfight between the two duchesses has made tantalizing headlines, but I don't believe that. I've never heard from my sources that there has ever been a feud or a falling-out."

There you have it, people. Now please leave Kate Middleton—and her ears—alone.
