Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz 'very confident' he will be ready for season opener
When the Philadelphia Eagles take the field to open up the regular season this September, quarterback Carson Wentz expects to be out on the field with them.
Wentz tore his ACL and LCL in his left knee on Dec. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams last season, and missed the remainder of the season — including the entirety of Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run.
Yet when he was asked about being ready in Week 1 on the NFL Network on Monday, Wentz seemed incredibly optimistic.
“I’m very confident. It’s a fluid process, so you never know how it’s going to go,” Wentz said. “But where we’re at, just trying to do what the doctors say and kind of just take it step by step. There’s the times where you feel great and want to push it more, but you have to just stay the course with what the doctors are saying. I feel really good and really confident for Week 1.”
The Eagles open up their season on Sept. 6 against the Atlanta Falcons.
Philadelphia’s other quarterback options
Wentz isn’t expected to participate in any spring workouts, and could miss the entire preseason. Should he not be ready to play in Week 1, the Eagles have other options.
They still have Nick Foles, who led Philadelphia through the postseason to the Super Bowl title after it lost its star quarterback. Foles went 28-of-43 for 373 yards and three touchdowns in the Super Bowl, and has proven himself more than capable of leading the Eagles’ offense.
Backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld will return this season. The Eagles also signed Joe Callahan to a two-year contract on Monday, giving them yet another option should Wentz be unable to play right away.
