Dylan O'Brien Shares "The Death Cure" Details Ahead of Final "Maze Runner" Movie

He calls Thomas's decisions "heart-wrenching."

In just a few days, the Maze Runner series will come to a close with its third installment The Death Cure. But if you can't wait that long to see the film (or haven't read the book on which the film is based) Dylan O’Brien recently dropped some spoilers in an interview with Business Mirror, including how his character Thomas's relationship with fellow Glader Teresa evolves.

"One of my favorite things about the story has always been their different perspectives," Dylan said about the pairing. "The sort of moral ambiguity. You’re not sure who is right or wrong, in any way. I’ve always loved that about it. I think that’s what you can really play with, that we do in this one, especially, because it’s the finale."

But don't worry — their relationship has not been destroyed forever. "With Teresa, I never wanted it to be, in the third movie, that they come back together and just hate each other," he explained, alluding to their different worldviews. "That would just seem so basic to me. No matter what they’ve been through, and what she did to him, really, I think he does still deep down inside understand. It wasn’t like he wasn’t listening to her on the mountain up there. I think he knows and hears and understands the reason, but he believes in entirely something else, so they’ve gone their separate ways. But [there’s] always been this connection. She was the first one he connected with. That’s just always how it is going to be between them, and that’s the person she’s going to be to him, and that’s not going to change, no matter what they’re disagreeing on or going through."

He also hinted that Thomas may learn WCKD isn't really wicked after all. "Thomas has been the eyes of the audience, and throughout the first two movies you’re convinced that they’re the Death Star," he said of the corporation. "That’s the whole idea, because you’re with him. I think it will be really interesting to see how people come around to seeing the other sides of everything, seeing it from all perspectives. Because that’s what Thomas finally has to do, in the most heart-wrenching way, at the worst time ever."

Dylan's recent description of the film in an interview with PopCulture.com sounds equally intense. The opening sequence is Indiana Jones-esque, he said, referencing the movie's delay due to an injury he experienced: "Especially with the gap between the last movie and this one, it's just a great way to throw everyone back into the world." Luckily, we won't have to wait long for that, because the movie comes out Friday.
