Dyeing Your Hair Two Different Colors Is the New Trend We Can’t Get Enough Of

Serious question: Would you dye your hair two different colors?

Tired of your boring old natural hair color? Looking for some new hair inspo? Well, look no further kids. There’s a new hair trend in town and it’s one of the strangest (but coolest) ones we’ve seen yet: dyeing your hair two different colors, at once. Sounds a little nutty, but in the best way possible, am I right?

Whether dyeing your bangs blue and the rest of your hair pink or dyeing one side of your hair a single color and the other side a different color, this is officially the new hair trend we didn’t know we needed that we definitely want to try. Because, I mean, why not?!

Spotted on the @bleachlondon Instagram account, with looks created by their team of inventive colorists, including @alishadobson, @georgiabluebassett, and @emmadavisonhair, we saw this trend bubbling up on Instagram months ago, and now we’re spotting it on even more folks so obviously we had to share the news.

Alex Brownsell, cofounder and creative director at BLEACH London, says the name they’ve given to this style is "BLEACH bit" and that it draws on past references such as “the stripes of Lily Munster in the 1960s, Geri Halliwell in the '90s, perhaps even Rogue in X-Men.” According to Alex, though, the person who really brought the look back is designer Mimi Wade, who has been a regular at BLEACH London for some time and experimented with many different incarnations and colors, all falling under the BLEACH bit style. With the help of her stylist, Mimi, who originally took inspiration from Kelli Garner in the 2001 film Bully, has transformed the look, says Alex.

So why is this unusual look becoming popular? “It’s always been quite alternative, perhaps a bit witchy even," Alex says over email. "It’s kind of had a gothic connotation, and that sense has come through its interpretations over the years. It can be both very bold and very subtle. It’s a great way to add light around the face and looks different than normal highlights. It’s a more interesting placement of color.”

And don’t worry, this style can be easily achieved at home. Alex tells Teen Vogue, “It’s also a really easy, low-maintenance way of having color in the hair without having to commit to it all over, and it’s pretty striking when it’s contrasting colors.” Her tip? Section out the hair well, and make conditioning a priority. “As your hair is being stripped back, it’s important to replace what it needs to be healthy. I recommend doing this as you bleach in the first place,” says Alex. To keep your hair healthy, try BLEACH London’s new product PLEX BLEACH, which she says allows all hair types to lift with the added strengthening of maleic acid. “This is an ingredient that penetrates the hair and bonds with its keratin structure, meaning it becomes more resistant and is better protected.” As the bleach degrades proteins in the hair, the PLEX formula will replenish and strengthen the hair strands, so the process is a lot less damaging.

Alex also recommends maintaining the color and glow with good conditioners plus treatments and masks every so often, like the company’s London Beer Mask, which has essential amino acids and proteins to strengthen the hair. Lastly, Alex says she swears by the brand’s HAIR ELIXIR, which is a prep and finishing serum with avocado oil that conditions the hair, and B Once.

With this interchangeable look, the world is truly your oyster. “You can tone it, color it to any shade you wish,” says Alex. She expects this look to make its way from the salon and street to celebrity style in the near future.

In the meantime, we’re watching the brand’s awesome tutorial videos and deciding whether we think we could do it ourselves.
