While coconut oil tends to get all the buzz, there's another oil that's giving it a run for its money. Derived from the nuts of argan trees found in Morocco, argan oil is another option that can be used head to toe. Personally, I'm partial to what it can do for your hair. I tapped hair tool brand T3's lead stylist, Laura Polko, as well as Josie Maran, founder of her namesake argan oil skincare line, to get the download on the multipurpose oil.

The Benefits Of Argan Oil

"Argan oil has a high concentration of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamin E, meaning it softens, boosts shine, and strengthens hair," explains Polko. Maran also notes that the vitamin E helps to mend split ends while protecting against heat and free radicals, thanks to its antioxidant properties (this makes it ideal for damaged or stressed strands).

Polko explains that in order to get healthy hair, you have to feed it with healthy ingredients—just as you do your body. "Argan oil has a lot of the components you would look for in a healthy diet—good fats, vitamins, antioxidants—which can only be good for your hair too," she says.

How To Use Argan Oil On Your Hair

While there are many products that boast argan oil on their ingredient list, you can also use the oil on its own for some DIY beauty treatments.

1.Leave-In Conditioner

Polko recommends smoothing argan oil onto damp strands after the shower for a smoother blowout that is also protected from heat damage.

2. Styling Product

The hairstylist likes to use argan oil in place of a gel when creating "wet" looks or a slicked back ponytail. "You get the same effect that you would with a styling product, but you're also treating the hair at the same time," adds Polko.

3. Finishing Touch

Maran uses a dab of the oil on her fingers to smooth down flyaways and any unruly hairs, while Polko likes to use it on the ends of her hair when she creates beach waves to give them a more polished look.

4. Hydrating Mask

Soak up all that argan oil has to offer by using it as a mask. Massage the argan oil into damp strands from roots to ends, working any excess directly onto your scalp (it can help calm and hydrate dry, itchy skin). Leave it on for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it out. "Not only will it help to protect hair and its elasticity from future harm, it will also repair the damage that's been done," says Polko.

5. Color Protector

Keep your dye job fresh without having to cover it up in a hat by using a little argan oil as a finishing product. "The antioxidants found in argan oil can protect your hair color from free radicals that can alter the color over time," explains Polko. Massage a few drops between your palms, then run your hands through the length of your hair to get the benefits without leaving hair looking greasy.
