Tom Bergeron is honoring the memory of Hollywood legend Ed Asner and a cause close to his heart.

For the second year, the former Dancing With the Stars host is hosting a star-studded virtual table reading of the 1964 holiday classic film It’s a Wonderful Life. Jason Sudeikis and Rosario Dawson are set to star as George and Mary Bailey, while the Ted Lasso star's real-life uncle George Wendt will portray Uncle Billy. The cast also includes Jean Smart, Mark Hamill, Martin Sheen, Mandy Patinkin, Lou Diamond Phillips, Phil Lamarr, Ben Mankiewicz, Ron Funches and Ed Harris.

The special live event will honor Ed and proceeds will benefit The Ed Asner Family Center. Its mission is to promote mental-health enrichment programs for children with special needs and their families.

Shortly after the official announcement was made, Tom helped spread the word on Twitter. “Excited to be returning as host and SO happy we could, um, lasso ‘Ted’ (and the incredible Jean Smart, among others) to benefit @EdAsnerCenter and honor the late @TheOnlyEdAsner,” he wrote.

Later that evening, Tom shared original art for the virtual table reading and formally announced the date. “Working with a cast like this...for a cause like this...is enough to give a guy a big head! 😏🎅🏼,” he wrote. “Join us on December 5th @EdAsnerCenter.”

Upon hearing about his latest project, fans of the former Dancing With the Stars host showed their support in return. “What a wonderful cast! Ed would love it!” one person wrote. “That's going to be a great table read!” another added. “They choose the #BestHost in the business,” a different fan said. “Ticket purchased. What a delightful event!” a follower commented.

On August 29, Ed died at the age of 91 at his home in California surrounded by his family. Best known for playing journalist Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, he went on to star in more than 400 other titles, including hit movies like Elf and the animated movie Up.

If you’re interested in seeing Tom honor Ed’s legacy, make sure to buy your tickets and tune in next month over Zoom.
