It's no surprise that Kelly Clarkson can sing anything. She's proven that time and time again with her Kellyoke covers of artists like Whitney Houston, Brooks and Dunn, and Dolly Parton. But some fans are a little surprised by her latest duet partner.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson joined Kelly on her talk show to discuss his new movie Black Adam and his love for country music. He joined Kelly on stage to pay tribute to country music icon Loretta Lynn, who died on October 4. Of course, most fans will remember that The Rock famously sang "You're Welcome" as Maui in the Disney movie Moana, and who could forget his viral rap on Tech N9ne's song "Face Off"? But hearing him sing a classic country hit is still surprising.
Kelly and Dwayne teamed up to perform Loretta's 1967 song "Don't Come Home a' Drinkin (With Lovin' on Your Mind)." Fans left hundreds of comments on the video.
"What a world we live in. Never in a million years would I think I’d ever see THE ROCK duet with Kelly Clarkson !!! Yes !!!!"
"What a sweet tribute to Loretta. The duet we never knew we needed."
"This is unexpected, didn't know Dwayne sang until now and loved his low voice that matches with Kelly's high notes which she killed it once more. What a great tribute to the late Loretta Lynn :)"
"His voice really actually fits that song. Who would have guessed Dwayne is a country boy?"
"So unexpected but so wholesome."
Dwayne revealed that he grew up listening to country music and, as a teenager living in Nashville, even dreamed of becoming a country singer. He told Kelly, "I love Loretta Lynn, loved her growing up, and I grew up on country music—traditional country music, like, three chords and the truth, twin fiddle, steel guitar kind of country music." He explained that he would walk the streets of Nashville singing Hank Williams, Jr., and hope someone would discover him and say, "'Oh, what do you do? You should come and sing.' But it didn't happen for me."
It seems like everything worked out just fine for Dwayne, but we'd love to hear more singing from him in the future!
