  • In a new interview with WSJ Magazine, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opens up about how is past divorce impacted his feelings about getting married again.

  • “I was just scared. Personally, everything was in a very bad and challenging place,” he said of his life after his split from Dany Garcia.

  • Johnson and his longtime girlfriend, Lauren Hashian, married in August.

Dwayne Johnson and his wife Lauren Hashian are, undoubtedly, head-over-heels in love. But they were never in a rush to get married. They waited 12 years before tying the knot this year, and in an interview with WSJ Magazine, Johnson admitted that his past divorce had something to do with that.

“My divorce did a number on me,” he said. The Jumanji: The Next Level star was married to Dany Garcia, with whom he has an 18-year-old daughter, Simone. By the time they officially divorced in 2008, per People, he and Hashian had already started dating. They reportedly met in 2006 while Johnson was filming The Game Plan.

He recounted his first impression of her with WSJ. “Within 30 seconds, I thought, ‘Wow, this girl’s stunning,’” he said. But, at the time, he was navigating his split with Garcia, and it wasn’t easy. “I was going through my breakup with Dany and [Hashian] was just coming off a big breakup, too,” he said. “Ironically, when you’re not looking for something, the power of the universe kind of takes over.”

In 2018, Johnson told Rolling Stone that after his divorce, he dealt with depression for the first time. “I was just struggling, man. Struggling to figure out what kind of dad am I gonna be. Realizing I’d done a piss-poor job of cultivating relationships, and a lot of my friends had fallen by the wayside,” he said. “I was just scared. Personally, everything was in a very bad and challenging place.”

Then Hashian came along and showed him the love and support he needed. “I wasn’t fearful of getting married again, there was just some hesitancy,” he shared with WSJ. “But Lauren was incredibly patient: ‘I love you, you love me, we have this amazing life together—no presh.’”

In December 2015, they welcomed their first daughter together, Jasmine. And in April 2018, they had their second, Tiana. In August 2019, they shared an intimate elopement in Hawaii and became husband and wife. “We do,” Johnson wrote on Instagram. “August 18th, 2019. Hawaii. Pōmaikaʻi (blessed).”

Despite his initial hesitation, Johnson considers himself lucky to have found love twice in his life. “I was so fortunate to have fallen in love once,” he told People in 2012. “To fall in love again? That’s a hard thing to do twice in the position I’m in. I’m one lucky son of a b*tch.”
