Dutch Label Sandwich Joins Bankruptcy Brigade
It appears Sandwich has been squeezed.
Word surfaced Thursday that the Amsterdam-based fashion brand has been declared bankrupt by a court in Breda, Netherlands.
Dutch filings indicate that the designation was made on Feb. 14. The firm, Sandwich Fashion Co. B.V. , was founded in 1981.
The Sandwich brand is owned by Veldhoven Group, a Dutch fashion and accessories retailer. Very little is know about its future plans, such as will it be able to complete deliveries of current wholesale orders. The company website has a note on the home page that says “We’ll be back soon.” The note also asks for a user e-mail address for notification—and a 10 percent welcome-back discount—when the site reopens.
Older filings indicate that Veldhoven International B.V. and three other related companies were declared bankrupt by the District Court of Amsterdam and The Hague back in November 2019. The businesses, at that time, listed their main operation as selling the Sandwich clothing brand in the Netherlands and Germany through self-operated brand stores, as well as third-party operated franchises. Other Sandwich entities and operations are not believed to have been impacted by the 2019 filings.
Sandwich is one of many struggling fashion brands that have been trying to survive in a post-Covid world that have reached the end of the line.
One example is Australian luxury fashion label Alice McCall, which began liquidating operations earlier this year. The company entered administration in 2020, but was unable to restructure its debt and finally called it quits. Amsterdam-based men’s and women’s lifestyle brand Scotch & Soda also filed for bankruptcy last month in a Dutch court. One week after the filing, American brand management firm Bluestar Alliance revealed plans to acquire Scotch & Soda. Bluestar owns the fashion brands Bebe, Tahari, Justice, Nanette Lepore, Catherine Malandrino and Kensie, among others.
