Five years ago, Susan Corrigan bought a “tired” top-floor, two-bedroom apartment in Hoorn, Netherlands, an old Dutch town 30 kilometers north of Amsterdam. “The property had been lived in for 17 years and was in serious need of cosmetic renovation,” Susan begins, explaining that she spent four months renovating the space, updating the kitchen, the bathroom, and the plasterwork.

The apartment’s living room has 15-foot-high ceilings, and Susan explains that it was a bit of a challenge when renovating. She says the local builder needed internal scaffolding when plastering and painting the walls.

"The room has identical windows on either end," Susan describes of the living room. "I painted the frames black for emphasis and have electrically operated sun blinds as it gets too warm in the summer otherwise." Credit: Photos by Dana Credit: Photos by Dana

The floors were also updated throughout the apartment, and the gorgeous new glass/steel door made by a local company “means when you enter the apartment you can see straight to the view of the rooftops,” she writes.

Initially, Susan shared this space with her youngest son, but now it’s just her living in the apartment. “It’s a great space with lots of natural light and rooftop views of the old town,” she shares. Susan loves plants and says they love her home as much as she does.

“Because of the high ceiling and huge windows, they seem to thrive here,” she writes. “I brought most of the furniture from my old home, which I’d shared with my late husband and our three kids. Surprisingly the furniture looks better here than it did there!”

Thanks Susan!
