Dunkin' Discontinues Fan-Favorite Drink

After 23 years on Dunkin' menus, fans are steaming over its elimination.

Dunkin's take on the popular blend of coffee and hot chocolate-flavored beverages is no more.

The Dunkaccino has reportedly been cut from menus nationwide, a move that comes as no surprise to Dunkin' regulars that recently found themselves unable to get their hands on the beloved beverage.

"As we focus on innovation and finding new ways to delight guests, we continually evolve our menu in an effort to deliver a fast, frictionless experience,"a spokesperson for the brand confirmed in a statement first shared with TODAY.com.

The spokesperson added that there's always a chance for a comeback, noting, "The Dunkaccino is retired for now, but there’s always the chance for its return in the future."

The Dunkaccino, which once featured a "unique blend of coffee and hot chocolate flavors," was first released in 2000 and became somewhat of a viral meme after Al Pacino rapped about it in Adam Sandler's 2011 comedy Jack and Jill.

The item became so popular, Dunkin' expanded the line to include a frozen option in 2015, which has also since been discontinued.

The hot Dunkaccino is still listed on the company's website. However, as many social media users pointed out over the past few months, the item quietly disappeared from menus at Dunkin' locations across the nation.

Last year, Reddit user u/Manualham leaked an image of Dunkin' menu items that were supposed to be "eliminated." Included in that list was the Dunkaccino.

Shortly after that picture went viral, fans started scrambling with how they would cope if the brand did away with the drink (which it has); some asked for alternative drink suggestions, while others thought outside the box.

One, in particular, took the dedicated Dunkin' Donuts subreddit to pose a question about the machines and the likelihood that the company would be willing to sell one to a customer looking to recreate the Dunkaccino at home.

"Forgive me for the stupid question, but Dunkaccino is just something I've ordered almost exclusively for the last 20 years," Redditor u/JTex-WSP began.

"It's basically the only 'coffee' that I consistently like, probably since it's made by a machine so it's always the same. I've even had the experience where the machine is broken, so some poor employee tries to 'recreate' a Dunkaccino by mixing stuff together and it just fails to capture that same semblance," they explained, continuing, "With the news that the Dunkaccino is being eliminated, I'm understandably crushed. So someone said to me, 'Maybe you can find a local store that's going to get rid of the machine and ask if you can have or buy it.'"

"Is this feasible?" they asked. "I imagine there's still some kind of proprietary mix but the mere notion of actually owning one of these machines to perpetually still have my favorite drink of choice is something that I had to at least post here and inquire about!"

To the user's dismay, they were told by former Dunkin' workers that the machines are also used to make hot chocolate and probably aren't going anywhere. Some Redditors also speculated the reason for the elimination of the drink might have to do with supply chain issues related to the Dunkaccino mix, in hopes that it could be sorted out and see a return to menus in the future.
