Everything We Know About 'Dune: Prophecy'HBO

In the first book in the Dune series alone, there are hundreds of pages of world-building explaining the planet of Arrakis, the spice, and the mysterious Bene Gesserit. The film only scratches the surface of the powerful, secretive group that Paul’s mother, Lady Jessica (played in the film by Rebecca Ferguson), is a part of.

For anyone who needs a refresher (or was completely confused by the movie’s explanation), the Bene Gesserit are an all-women organization of various mental and physical skills who seek to create stability in humanity. The organization places their members in positions of power across different planets (wives of influential men, agents, etc) to carefully guide society in the direction they desire.

As we know from the first book in the series, Lady Jessica was a concubine sent to control Duke Leto Atreides, but ultimately fell in love and abandoned her plans, giving birth to Paul (to give him an heir) instead of a girl as the Bene Gesserit demanded.

Her story is just one part of a larger tale about the power the Bene Gesserit holds. The organization has been around for years before the first book, and has far-reaching implications on the world of Dune. It turns out Max agrees there’s more content to mine, and a prequel series is now on the way to depict the intriguing history of the Bene Gesserit.

Is there a trailer?

Nope, not yet.

When is Dune: Prophecy coming out?

According to TVLine, Dune: Prophecy (formerly called Dune: Sisterhood), is set to premiere in fall 2024. While we don't have an exact date just yet, it's only a matter of time.

Who’s in the cast?

We have no idea. Depending on how far back the series goes in the Dune timeline, we could have completely new characters, or see younger versions of the characters from the film. Back in July, Variety reported Diane Ademu-John would replace Jon Spaights as showrunner (who’s now busy writing the Dune sequel). We also know that Denis Villeneuve himself will executive produce the series and also direct the pilot. Other than that, we have nothing officially.

Rebecca Ferguson, who, again, plays Lady Jessica in Dune, said previously in an interview with The Playlist that she would be open to appearing in the series (though she hadn't heard anything official from anyone). "If it’s a thing, I’m game," she said. "However, I’m currently free in 2023, May to December, so I’m just putting that out there."

If she managed to film an appearance in the show, we may see it in the trailer still to come.

What is Dune: Prophecy about?

Well, it’s still unclear what point in the organization’s long history the show will focus on. If it’s the Bene Gesserit’s inception, the show will be completely unrelated to the events of Dune and Dune: Part Two, and only begin to explain how we get to the events in the movie.

In the books, the Bene Gesserit is said to have risen to prominence after the Butlerian Jihad, when humans overthrew an all-controlling AI (kind of like The Matrix). That event was thousands of years before Dune, so Prophecy has a lot of material to work with.
