'Dune 2' Novelty Popcorn Bucket Earns Unfavorable Comparison to Human Anatomy

As if a trip to the theater wasn't expensive enough these days, many chains are now offering novelty popcorn buckets to further hit moviegoers in the wallet, such as AMC's Barbie pink convertible popcorn container or a 20-sided die for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. But while these collectibles may appeal to hardcore fans, the leaked design for the upcoming Dune: Part Two novelty popcorn bucket may attract a different type of consumer altogether.

The design, which appears to be a prototype, appears to have surfaced online this week. "I kid you not … these are the Dune 2 popcorn buckets," posted movie critic and content creator Cris Parker on X, formerly Twitter, adding an appropriate pair of shocked face and skull emojis.

It's unclear if this is the final design—and the image's inclusion of French text could indicate it may be intended for international audiences only—but once the images of the unsettlingly flesh-colored popcorn bucket began to circulate on the internet, people couldn't help drawing inevitable comparisons to parts of the human anatomy. What parts, specifically, we will leave up to the eye of the beholder. But let's just say users immediately began joking about what they'd like to do with the bucket.

"Nobody wants to know what I'm dune 2 this," quipped one user. "He who controls the wormussy controls the universe," added another. "I’d get kicked out 7 minutes into the movie," suggested one apparent Dune super fan.

Some were, shall we say, less subtle.

Others simply posted pop culture memes, such as from HBO's Mr. Show and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to get their point across.

Director Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Dave Bautista, along others, premieres on on March 1, 2024—popcorn bucket not included in the ticket price.
