Remember when basement-dwelling Redditors and the Elon Musk fan club (two sides of the same coin) brought down the entire stock market? Good times. Dumb Money, the latest from Craig Gillespie, the director of I, Tonya, Cruella, and Lars and the Real Girl, follows the “GameStop short squeeze” of January 2021. It’s been a busy couple of years, so in case you forgot, here’s what happened.

In January 2021, the meme community infiltrated the stock market with the practical joke of the century by inflating the value of GameStop’s stock, the price surging nearly 50%. Thus, inciting a textbook “short squeeze.” According to Trading Sim, “shorting a stock refers to first borrowing shares at the current price, selling them, and then repurchasing those shares at a lower price.” I won’t delve any further because, in truth, I can’t. I was an English major. Basically what began as a meme across the annals of the deep internet became a legitimate economical concern, so much so that finance apps like Robinhood completely halted the buying of GameStop stock to help quell the Redditors’ Rebellion. By March, the joke was over and the stock had recovered. All of this for a brick and mortar video game store which I truly didn’t realize was still in business. Moving on.

Dumb Money stars an ensemble cast including Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Vincent D’Onofrio, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, and Shailene Woodley. The entertainment industry moves at lightning speed, and though the GameStop debacle only occurred in January 2021, it was soon documented in a novel from Ben Mezrich, titled The Accidental Billionaires. That novel serves as the source material for Dumb Money, which premiered to rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

How Can I Watch ‘Dumb Money’?

Now, to be the bearer of bad news. Dumb Money is currently playing exclusively in theaters. The film was initially slated to hit theaters on October 6, but in anticipation of complete theater monopolization by Taylor Swift with her new film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, the studio opted to move the release up. Dumb Money hits theaters on September 29. As of now, that is the only place to watch it. We implore you to do what the Redditors’ could never do: leave your house, visit a movie theater, interact with the staff, take a seat, relax.

Want to wait? Fine, have it your way. Dumb Money comes from Sony Pictures, which signed an exclusive streaming deal with Netflix in 2022. Playing by those rules, the film will eventually land on Netflix, and likely sooner rather than later. If we’re hedging our bets, we’d say you’ll be able to watch this film on your couch by January, if not by year’s end.
