Duchess Meghan Reveals the Moment She and Prince Harry Decided to Leave the United Kingdom

Duchess Meghan is speaking her truth.
In a new interview with The Cut, the Duchess of Sussex talked about the moment that she and Prince Harry decided to leave the United Kingdom as the never-ending barrage of abusive press coverage affected Meghan's health and the Sussexes's relationship to the royal hierarchy.
As tabloids continued to scrutinize the couple's spending "under the guise of public interest" since their lives were taxpayer funded, they suggested that they no longer be taxpayer funded and, instead, be allowed to work and earn their own money on behalf of the monarchy. "Then maybe all the noise would stop," Meghan explained.
They also appealed to the Firm to leave the U.K., subsequently leaving the U.K. press behind, too. Meghan and Harry were willing to go to any country in the Commonwealth, like Canada, New Zealand, or South Africa.
"Anything to just … because just by existing, we were upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy. So we go, ‘Okay, fine, let’s get out of here. Happy to,’" Meghan said, adding that their request wasn't "reinventing the wheel" and citing other royals who have made a similar arrangement.

In spite of that, Meghan said, "That, for whatever reason, is not something that we were allowed to do, even though several other members of the family do that exact thing."
Meghan and Harry announced that they would be stepping down as senior members of the royal family in January 2020.
A statement released on their now defunct Instagram account at the time read, "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages."
