Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at age 87 on Friday. Justice Ginsburg passed away following complications due to metastatic pancreas cancer, and was surrounded by members of her family when she died, the court announced.

After being appointed in her role by Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg soon became known for her progressive votes on crucial issues such as abortion rights, same-sex marriage, healthcare, immigration, and affirmative action, per CNN. A true feminist icon, Ginsburg regularly criticized the Trump administration.

Following the sad news of Ginsburg's passing, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has released a statement of condolence via her representatives. Duchess Meghan said, "With an incomparable and indelible legacy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg will forever be known as a woman of brilliance, a Justice of courage, and a human of deep conviction. She has been a true inspiration to me since I was a girl. Honour her, remember her, act for her."

Meghan's statement honoring the late Justice comes as people around the world pay tribute to Ginsburg and her legacy. Per NPR, Chief Justice John Roberts said of Ginsburg's death, "Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature... We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tireless and resolute champion of justice."

NPR also reported that, just days before her death, Ginsburg told her granddaughter, Clara Spera, "My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."
