Dua Lipa "Surprised and Horrified" After DaBaby's Homophobic Speech at Rolling Loud

Dua Lipa has now addressed the homophobic comments rapper DaBaby made during a performance at the Rolling Loud Festival on July 25.

On Tuesday, July 27, Dua, who collaborated with the Cleveland rapper on the no. 1 remix for her song “Levitating,” condemned DaBaby’s remarks in a post on her Instagram Stories. “I’m surprised and horrified at DaBaby’s comments. I really don’t recognize this as the person I worked with. I know my fans know where my heart lies and that I stand 100% with the LGBTQ community. We need to come together to fight the stigma and ignorance around HIV/AIDS,” the singer wrote against a black background.

During his performance at the festival, DaBaby asked concertgoers to raise their flashlights if they “didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that will make you die in 2-3 weeks,” TMZ reported on July 26. The rapper followed his comment on stage with more homophobic remarks explicitly about men having sex with men, and somebody from the crowd even threw a shoe at the stage, seemingly in discontent.

After Dua posted her note, DaBaby took to Twitter to address his words, claiming he had been misinterpreted. “I tell fans to put a cellphone light in the air y’all start a million man March [sic]. I told you y’all digested that wrong but I ain’t gone lie I’m impressed. Now show this same amount of support when a racist cop kill [sic] one of our black ass…YA NOT.”

He then continued, “Anybody who done ever been effected [sic] by AIDS/HIV y’all got the right to be upset, what I said was insensitive even though I have no intentions on offending anybody. So my apologies.” However, the rapper followed the apologies with an arguably derogatory addendum. “But the LGBT community... I ain’t trippin on y’all, do you. y’all business is y’all business.” As Variety notes, DaBaby also reportedly addressed his words during an Instagram Live while making even more offensive statements.

As expected, DaBaby’s “apology” didn’t go over well with many in the LGBTQ+ community. Meanwhile, many Dua Lipa fans are asking for the rapper to be removed from the “Levitating” remix. And artist Victoria Monét has already offered herself as a potential replacement: “If she would like to replace DaBaby’s verse on levitating I’m totally available,” she tweeted this week.
