Drunk Uber passenger caught on dashcam video trying to grab steering wheel from driver
A California Uber driver’s dashcam caught a near-death experience on video over the weekend when his drunk passenger grabbed the steering wheel. The driver, Dax Castro, said in a Facebook post that they were going 65 miles per hour on an eight-lane freeway.
“I almost died. We almost died on the freeway,” Castro said in a video posted over the weekend.
Once Castro safely stopped the car, police arrived at the scene and gave the passenger a Breathalyzer test and he blew a .19, according to Castro’s Facebook posts. In California, it’s illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level of .08 or higher.
Castro’s first video showed a police officer talking to a man outside a doughnut shop, who Castro identified as the passenger who almost got them killed. The man was arrested on a DUI charge, according to Castro.
In the dashcam video the Uber driver later posted, he’s seen pushing the passenger back and then holding his arm to prevent him from grabbing the wheel again.
“Stupid thing was that had he thrown up in my car I would have gotten a $250 cleaning fee but because he only tried to kill me I get nothing had to go home early lost $200 in earnings for the night!” Castro wrote on Instagram.
Uber said in a statement to CBS Sacramento that the rider can no longer access the ride-hailing app. “The behavior in the video is dangerous and unacceptable,” the statement said.
Castro told CBS that he recommends other Uber drivers invest in a dashcam so they can provide evidence if they ever need to take legal action. He added that he hasn’t been able to drive since the ordeal.
“Obviously I’m thankful that I’m alive,” Castro wrote on Instagram.
