Drone Video Shows Dozens of Sharks Infiltrating Popular Gulf Coast Beach, Surf Spot

A group of sharks is called a shiver.

Fitting, as that’s likely the response one might have from the footage below.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, beachgoers near one of Alabama’s select-few surf spots got a bit of a scare: dozens of sharks. A shiver, if you will. Very close to shore.

The video comes from local news outlet, WKRG. It shows Orange Beach, near Alabama Point, “one of the best [surfing] options on the Alabama mainland,” according to Surfline.

And yeah, it’s pretty terrifying. There’re literally dozens of, what appear to be, juvenile sharks – the kind that bite. And they’re just floating there, ominously, just a stone’s throw from swimmers in the water.

But, good news: it looks like nobody was bitten. And the sharks went on their way.

“We were actually in the water and some of the people on the coast were saying shark, shark and so we saw it,” Stacie Savaiano told WKRG. “It went right behind these two. They were out in the ocean and you could see the dark shadow of the shark go by. Very scary, very scary.”

According to WKRG:

“Tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks and bull sharks are the most common ones seen off the Alabama Gulf Coast.

“Bait fish are one of the reasons more sharks come closer to shore. It’s not unusual to spot this many in one area at certain times during the year, but it’s definitely not what folks are wanting to see on vacation.”

Vacation or not, this many sharks is not what anyone wants to see...ever.
