Driving to Coachella from San Diego? Here are some things to do
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The Coachella Valley is only about a three-hour drive from San Diego, making it a great road trip destination for people looking to escape the coast for a weekend or even just a day trip to the desert.
In fact, if you’re planning to attend the Coachella Music and Arts Festival which is happening in the city of Indio this weekend and next, there are several things worth experiencing on your way there or on the days you’re not jamming out to live musical performances by your favorite artists.

First of all, know which route you plan on taking because there are a few ways to get there from San Diego.
You can hop on northbound SR-63 and continue on I-15 until you reach Temecula. From there, you can drive east on SR-79, turn on eastbound SR-371 and continue on the route until you reach the city of Palm Desert. Once you’re there, you’ll only be less than 15 miles away from Indio.
An alternative route from San Diego is to drive east through Poway and get on northbound SR-67, continue through Ramona and Borrego Springs, and then follow northbound SR-86 toward Indio.

Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument
The monument provides a natural backdrop of palm trees, mountains and diverse types of wildflowers.
There are a few different canyons in Palm Springs and the surrounding area definitely worth stopping by. Tahquitz Canyon is home to a 60-foot waterfall and towering palm trees offering a space for serenity away.

Palm Springs is home to the world’s largest rotating tram car. If you’re not afraid of heights, hop on the tram car and enjoy breathtaking views of Chino Canyon as you travel up to the mountain station located more than 8,500 feet above ground.
Greater Palm Springs is a cultural art hub. If you have time, pay a visit to some of these public art installations, including the popular ‘Forever Marilyn’ statue located at the corner of Museum Way and Belardo Road.
