Drew Barrymore's Tween Daughter Had the Sassiest Clapback When Her Mom Said No to Crop Tops

If there’s one thing kids are going to do, it’s point out all their parents’ mistakes. Or, in Drew Barrymore’s case, the things they did in the past that are hypocritical to the rules they’re trying to implement now. (“But you had a boyfriend at 13, why can’t I?”)

On Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, host Drew Barrymore and Christina Aguilera bonded over one particular topic that both of their daughters have fought them on recently: wearing crop tops.

Aguilera was talking about how “free-spirited” she and Barrymore both are, which prompted the talk show host to share her conundrum.

“My daughter wants to wear a crop top, I’ll say, ‘no,’ and she’ll go, ‘You were on the cover of Playboy,‘” Barrymore, who shares daughters Olive, 11, and Frankie, 9, with ex-husband Will Kopelman, recalled. Kids are going to call you out every time!

“She’s already read — I love that she said that, though” Aguilera responded with a laugh. She then shared her own experience with fighting crop tops with her 9-year-old daughter Summer Rain, who she shares with fiancé Matt Rutler. (She is also mom to son Max, 15, with ex-husband Jordan Bratman.)

“Well, I knew it was coming the day I wore chaps. One day, I know I’m going to be like… ‘Cause my daughter wants to wear a crop top, too. And I am just like, ‘Can we just pull it down?’ I see myself doing that.”

“But I think I always try to instill in her that certain people out there have good intentions and bad intentions,” she added.

“Make it about other people, that’s interesting,” Barrymore said.

Body Empowerment

“I don’t wanna to scare her in one way and be terrified of the world, that everybody is a bad person because they’re not,” Aguilera continued. “But also, I think it’s important for her to have a strong sense of self but also to be very empowered with her body, and eventually will be her sexuality. So I want her to just really know herself first.”

The “Genie in a Bottle” singer defended her wearing of chaps and Barrymore gracing the cover of Playboy in 1995. “We were expressing ourselves and how we felt was best for us at the time.”

“I loved every minute of it,” Barrymore responded.

“We didn’t do it for someone else and then there are so many labels and judgments,” Aguilera said, adding, “It’s empowering being a female and embracing your body, and everything that makes you feel good or womanly. However, that is for yourself to be able to embrace that.”

Motherhood Fears

Fighting over crop tops is just one small part of Barrymore’s motherhood experience, who called parenting “surreal” in an interview with Us Weekly earlier this month.

“[Motherhood is] so surreal [for me],” the 50 First Dates star told the outlet. “When I see one of my kids going through something that reminds me of something I went through, I just go straight to fear, and then I have to talk myself off the ledge and get proactive and empathetic and [focus on] discipline and boundaries and guidance.”

She often asks herself, “How am I going to handle this? Do I have the skill set to fix this?” Barrymore added, “I have no blueprint, a crazy track record, and there’s nothing I’ve ever wanted to get more right in my life. But it isn’t a matter of right and wrong. It’s a matter of doing your best.”

And if that means giving rules to your kids that contradict your own past, then that’s OK. We are all figuring this parenthood thing out, one short hem at a time.
