By all accounts, Drew Barrymore is one of the kindest, most thoughtful women in Hollywood. On her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show, the multihyphenate's empathetic nature is on full display. Barrymore listens to every guest (from Oprah to Brooke Shields) with an unmatched level of engagement, creating a safe space for them to open up about their life and the things that matter to them. Because for Barrymore, it's all about connection and community.

In November 2023, I had the pleasure of basking in Barrymore's warm, endearing spirit up close and personal. We nestled onto the couch in her cozy dressing room at CBS Studios in New York to discuss the latest milestone in her longtime partnership with Garnier—becoming a brand ambassador for the Nutrisse Hair Color range and gracing the box of her hair color shade (#70). Ahead, Barrymore opens up about her relationship with Garnier, experimenting with hair color, and her winter beauty must-haves.

You started working with Garnier in 2021 and were appointed an ambassador for the brand's Nutrisse Hair Color in 2023. What do you love most about the brand?

"I started using Garnier years ago when I got mad at a shampoo because of how much it cost. I had sticker shock, so I went to the store and grabbed a new shampoo from Garnier because I loved the price point. I started using it on my hair, and my daughter's hair, and posted about it without any prompting because I like to share stuff with people. And that's how my relationship with Garnier started.

I wouldn't talk about a brand I didn't use myself. I always use a shampoo and conditioner from the brand and the SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water ($12) at night. I also use the Whole Blends Honey Treasures Hair Honey Repairing Serum ($10) and the Nutrisse Ultra Color Nourishing Creme ($10). I also love how intentional they are about being eco-conscious. Garnier's "One Green Step" program encourages people to make small changes to help the environment. It's a much more livable ethos than completely overhauling your life."

You’ve experimented with color over the years. Can you talk about your relationship with hair coloring?

"I'm someone who likes to study the color wheel to understand why and how hair dye works. I want to know how to remove color, how the history of the follicle [affects the hair], and which colors are harder to remove. I've always loved changing my look, and now I'm so settled. I have no interest in hair drama anymore, but I used to thrive on it."

Do you have a favorite hair color you've worn?

"I love red hair. I like a nice orange-red on top of high-lit, low-lit hair. The most intriguing thing about red hair is when you can see highlights and lowlights in the overall tone."

Are there any tips that have helped you keep your hair healthy while dyeing it?

"Don't bleach it. Sometimes, when you're younger, you don't care because you know it'll grow back. But now, I understand there are ways to remove color and keep your hair healthy. Having patience is so important. You don't need to completely flip your look overnight—which I have done. I went from having long reddish brown hair to a blunt platinum bob overnight."

More Beauty

You're also a beauty brand founder, launching Flower Beauty in 2013. What is one of the biggest lessons you've learned in the beauty business?

"The last decade has been such a game-changer with the increase of digital media, influencers, and social media. You might develop brand loyalty for life, but I also love that you can't get stuck on any trend because it will change. One minute, it's all about heavy makeup and contouring, and the next, everything is minimal. [Beauty] is an ever-changing thing."

What are some of your winter must-haves from Flower Beauty?

"Every day, I'm wearing the Dream Warrior Volumizing Mascara ($12). No other mascara helps me achieve thickness while separating my lashes. Many other volumizing mascara clumps so much at the base of your lashes, but the Dream Warrior Mascara works so well. I also use the Plump Up Gloss Sticks ($12) all the time."

As a busy talk show host, brand founder, and mother, how are you practicing self-care these days?

"I often don't take any of my advice and burn the candle at both ends. When I'm really burnt out, I have to tell myself, This is important to notice within yourself and do whatever it takes to recharge your batteries. Every once in a while, I'll get a weekend to myself without the kids and hang out alone or with my friends. Either way, I'll get some exercise in, order a lot of takeout food, and watch some television."

What's one of the biggest lessons you've learned in the last year? What are you looking forward to?

"I learned a lot about navigating social media and the digital world last year. There were a lot of tough lessons, but they were really helpful for me to move forward. You have to learn what works for you in terms of output and intake. This year, I want to take more trips with my girlfriends. I'm already trying to plan three before April."
