  • Drew Barrymore shares the piece of advice her “best friend” Cameron Diaz has been telling her “since the ‘90s.”

  • Diaz encouraged Barrymore to be more environmentally aware and to make sustainable changes, like turning the water off when she brushed her teeth.

  • “I made a promise to my best friend, Cameron Diaz, that I would become someone who she had been pushing me to be my whole life, which was environmentally aware,” Barrymore said.

Over the years, actress Drew Barrymore has taken a lot of advice from her longtime friend and fellow Hollywood star Cameron Diaz. But in a new interview, Barrymore reveals that Diaz has pushed her for quite some time to finally make a major lifestyle change that she’s excited to share with the world. The 47-year-old is going plastic-free and attributes her changes to the encouragement of her best friend.

“I made a promise to my best friend, Cameron Diaz, that I would become someone who she had been pushing me to be my whole life, which was environmentally aware, conscientious, and living a certain lifestyle that was sustainable,” Barrymore told People. “She’s been saying this since the ‘90s to me. Once I started living that way and really committing, [I] saw the world differently and it made me put it all into practice and action.”

She continued, “Cameron would literally be like, ‘Stop letting the water run while you’re brushing your teeth! Don’t do that!’ And she always felt like that big sister, leaning into me.”

The two actresses have not only starred in movies together but have been inseparable in their off-screen lives for years—30 years, in fact.

“We met when I was 14 and she was 16. I was working at a coffee house and she was a junior model,” Barrymore said during a 2021 Instagram Live video. “She’s still my bestie.”

In an effort to live a more sustainable life, the E.T. star said she has stopped using disposable plastic bags, which she described as her “favorite thing in the world,” and now opts for more sustainable options. She also has partnered with the eco-conscious brand Grove to spread awareness about the overuse of plastic.

But Barrymore has long been an advocate for making personal changes in support of the environment. The actress recently opened up to Prevention about going plant-based. “I haven’t eaten chicken in 13 years. I read a book called Eating Animals and that was it–never ate chicken again,” she said.

And she feels that it’s all about the little changes each of us individually makes that can make all the difference. “We need the micro and the macro. We need companies and people who change the world and are real game changers, as well as our own little individual efforts,” she told People.

Barrymore also made headlines recently when she posted an emotional video dancing in the rain and encouraged others to take a moment to do the same.

“I’m such a hippie that when I see the rain, I just think I want to go out in it and have a little baptism for Mother Nature and be free and not worried for a second,” she told People. “Because I do worry and stress a lot. I’m also not a hippie [sometimes] and really a person who wants to have action and be a business person and get things done. And with that comes a tremendous amount of pressure and stress…Rain is a signal for me to let go and stop overthinking everything.”

In the viral video, the actress stepped out into the rain and began to laugh while lifting her face to the sky. “Whenever you can, go into the rain,” she said into the camera. “Do not miss the opportunity!
