Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler Just Had the '50 First Dates' Reunion We've All Waited For

From Good Housekeeping

When thinking about iconic movie pairs, Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler instantly come to mind. From their first smash hit together in 1998 with The Wedding Singer, to 50 First Dates (2004) and Blended (2014), the two have solidified their place on the list of best on-screen Hollywood couples.

But the truth is, bringing these two together wasn't easy ... at least, according to Drew. Though she had already appeared in several films by the time she finally got to meet Adam, she revealed in her 2016 memoir, Wildflower, that she had to "beg, borrow, and steal" to get him to see her in person in the mid-'90s.

“It was definitely not obvious we were supposed to fit as well as I believed because we looked like a preppy and a punk set up on a bad blind date,” she wrote. “But I shook his hand with fervor, thanked him for meeting me, and began to plead my case to him. I told him that, for whatever reason, I knew that we were supposed to become a team.”

Apparently, she made a really strong case, because soon after, the Saturday Night Live comedian and his writing partner Tim Herlihy ended up collaborating for The Wedding Singer and Drew was cast as the lead female. With Howard Stern in 2015, Adam credited Drew for helping him get cast in romantic lead roles following the successful release of the 1998 film.

"Drew liking me made it seem like girls were allowed to like me in movies,” he said.

From there, their friendship blossomed — but romance never did, according to both parties. While promoting Blended in 2014, Chelsea Handler asked if the two had ever been together or considered a romantic relationship.

"Not even a little! Not even like, as we say in The Wedding Singer, 'Church tongue.' Nothing, really," Drew answered, according to US Weekly. Adam added, "No, we always just hung out and had a good time. We always socialized, but we never, it's good."

It makes sense, given that Drew had been married to her exes Tom Green (they were married in 2001 and split months later) and Will Kopelman (married between 2012 and 2016). Meanwhile, Adam has been with his wife, Jackie, since 2003 and apparently she absolutely loves Drew. In fact, Adam hilariously revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that Jackie has pushed him to give his best effort when it comes to romantic scenes with Drew:

“It’s like the best thing that my wife loves Drew so much that she like encourages me. There’s no jealousy at all. She’s just like, 'Get in there!' ... We’re [Adam and Drew] doing a nice romantic scene and I think I’m doing pretty great being as romantic as I can be and then like – Okay, moving on, let’s go, that was great, Drew. Good job. And I’m walking away and I just see my wife like (shaking her head) ... ‘What’s the matter?' [And she says] 'Just please, for the sake of women, get in there and just look a little more alive.'"

When they're not making movies together, Drew and Adam are still keeping in touch when they can. Most recently, Drew was invited to present Adam with his Best Actor Award for his performance in Uncut Gems (2019) during the National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala in January 2020.

“I love this man so much, and I have always believed in him,” Drew reportedly gushed at the event. “This moment, honestly, couldn’t be more deserved. I know that everyone is rooting for you because you have earned everyone’s respect. You deserve the best, you give the best and you are the best. I love you very much.”

Adam had nothing but nice things to tell Drew in return.

"Drew, that was amazing. You were just saying all of that stuff and it was amazing. You just winged it, and I know you thought about it, but you were so cool," he said while getting emotional. "I'm glad we met, and I'm glad we did it all and we always make our movies together.”

As for when their next film collaboration could be, only Drew and Adam know. But in the meantime, this adorable 50 First Dates reunion, which aired for the launch of Drew's new talk show, will tide us all over:

Aren't they just the best?!
