Dreamy Sunset Summer Skiing On Volcano

Timberline Lodge, nestled on the flanks of Oregon's volcanic Mt. Hood, is the mecca of summer skiing, providing lift-serviced access to the Palmer Glacier into September most seasons.

This clip from Line Skis athlete Reagan Wallis perfectly encapsulates skiing Mt. Hood in the warmer months.

I first saw Timberline as a camper at Windells summer ski camp (thanks mom and dad!). During that week, the Mt. Hood summer experience, replete with slushy park jumps, and corn snow turns, wriggled its way deep into my brain, carving out a permanent spot alongside other core memories I'd collected up to that point.

I needed to go back. The following summer, I convinced my dad to drive me and two friends to Mt. Hood. Then, later in high school, once we had our own licenses, we ditched the parental guidance and hit the road ourselves, sleeping at an ad-hoc campground called the Airstrip.

Other trips joined the fold, and by the time I graduated high school, I'd made it down to Mt. Hood five or six times to summer ski. Then, I shipped off to college, unintentionally eschewing return trips as my summer work schedules became busier.

While I've made it back to the Mt. Hood area during the winter to hit Meadows and Skibowl, it's been seven years since I last camped at the Airstrip, swam in Trillium Lake post-skiing, or let my life revolve around summer warmth and corn snow for a few glorious days.

It might just be the old nostalgia talking again, but I genuinely believe there's something magical about Mt. Hood in the summer. And, I'm not alone in these suspicions; just read Reagan Wallis' caption on his video: "Mt Hood provides a feeling, something special found no where else."

All of this is to say, if you have the chance to get some skiing in at Mt. Hood this summer, do it. You won't be disappointed.
