Like A Dragon Gaiden’s English Dub Is Coming This Month

The latest Like a Dragon game, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, was released last month, but curiously and unlike past games in the series did not have an English dub at launch. Developer RGG Studio said it would be coming in a post-launch update, and now we know exactly(ish) when that’s going to be.

In a post on Twitter, RGG Studio announced that Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name would be getting its English dub sometime in December. The new audio track – which will likely also come with some sort of lip syncing – will be available to players via a free update, though the exact date isn’t known yet.

The game is the latest game in the Like a Dragon series, formerly known as the Yakuza series prior to the seventh main series game. The change was made to more closely align the series with its Japanese name, Ryu Ga Gotoku, which means Like A Dragon (shocker), as it moves away from Yakuza as the primary source of storytelling and conflict.

Gaiden is a bridging story, telling the tale of what happened to Kiryu between Yakuza 6 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon, where he made a surprise appearance towards the end of the game. It also links to the next game in the series, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, and takes place concurrently with Yakuza: Like a Dragon in some sections too. It’s very hard to place in the chronological Yakuza timeline because of this.

Still, an English dub for Gaiden will be a huge boon for a lot of players, especially those who struggle to focus on the action and subtitles at the same time. And because Like a Dragon Gaiden is on Xbox Game Pass, it may very well be more accessible to heaps more people because of this.

Thankfully, Infinite Wealth will have an English dub when it releases in January — as a main series game it gets a lot more budget and attention from the higher ups at Sega. That’s probably why the next Like a Dragon game will let you play an Animal Crossing-style minigame, there’s just a lot more money and development resources to go around.
