Once you’ve settled into Vernworth, you’ll start working to expose the false Arisen and claim your throne. One of the tasks along this path is freeing a magistrate called Waldhar from the palace’s dungeons. You’ll be provided a key to let him out, but you’ll have to figure out a way to sneak in and out undetected yourself.

We’ll explain the best way to get into the prison, and how to get Waldhar out in no time at all.

How To Infiltrate the Gaol in Dragon’s Dogma 2

You will need to disguise as a guard to enter the gaol.
You will need to disguise as a guard to enter the gaol.

There are a couple of different ways to do this, such as finding an unguarded entrance or using the Thief’s skill to hide yourself. However, the easiest way to purchase a guard’s armor, which is available from the supplies shop in the center of town. It’s relatively cheap to do this as well, costing under 5000 gold.

You can also find a full guard's armor for free in the sewers just outside the castle in Vernworth.

Wear all three pieces of the armor, and you’ll be able to walk around the prison and palace freely at any time of day, without any of the other guards bothering you, allowing you to get to Waldhar’s cell on the bottom level of the gaol. Once you’ve unlocked his cell, talk to him and you’ll encounter a problem – he doesn’t want to leave.

Waldhar will tell you that he cares only for knowledge and that he won’t be leaving the gaol with you unless you provide him a location that can satisfy that need, at which point your objective will change to “find a place with plenty of tomes.” Thankfully, such a place exists in Vernworth.

You can offer to take Waldhar to the vault of the Gracious Hand, which can only be unlocked by completing The Heel of History quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2 – check out that link for a guide on how to complete it.

Once you make Waldhar this offer, he will follow you out of the gaol. It’s best to take the back route out of the prison here, which is just through a gate at the end of the same room where you’ll find Walhar’s cell. Once you’re out in the open, Waldhar will make his own way there.
