Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero Reveals ‘Oops! All Goku’ Roster

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Goku SS Blue

There’s a little bit of a meme among Dragon Ball fighting game fans that most of the roster in any given game is just Goku. For some reason – actually let’s face it, the reason is popularity – the developers of Dragon Ball fighting games love to separate every different form and age of Goku into different characters. And with Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero on the horizon, it seems like nothing’s changed.

Publisher Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero, the latest game in the Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi series. The trailer is focused on Goku and Vegeta, and their enemies-to-rivals arc over the course of the series.

In the (very flashy) trailer, we see a series of fights between various versions of Goku and Vegeta in various forms. There’s the original scanner-wielding Vegeta fighting off a Kaio-ken Goku, Super Saiyan Goku throwing fists with Super Saiyan Vegeta, Vegeta and Goku fighting against each other in Super Saiyan Blue, the whole lot really.

It’s actually the most gameplay we’ve seen of the game since it was announced, and it’s looking pretty good in all honesty. Is it worth the 17-year wait since the last game in the series? Maybe not so much. But it does very much look like a new Budokai Tenkaichi game, and that’s what fans want.

Alongside the trailer was a blog post with the revelation that these aren’t, in fact, different forms of the same characters, but instead separate, distinct characters. Each form of Goku seems to be its own entire character, and Bandai Namco says that “each character brings a unique blend of techniques and abilities.”

I’m personally a teensy bit doubtful about that, given the currently revealed roster, but take a look for yourself at the newly revealed characters below — and keep in mind these are all separate characters on the roster.

  • Goku (Z - Early)

  • Goku (Z - Mid)

  • Goku (Z - Mid), Super Saiyan

  • Goku (Z - End)

  • Goku (Z - End), Super Saiyan

  • Goku (Z - End), Super Saiyan 2

  • Goku (Z - End), Super Saiyan 3

  • Goku (Super)

  • Goku (Super), Super Saiyan

  • Goku (Super), Super Saiyan God

  • Goku (Super), Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan

  • Vegeta (Z - Scouter)

  • Great Ape Vegeta

  • Vegeta (Z - Early)

  • Vegeta (Z - Early), Super Saiyan

  • Super Vegeta

  • Vegeta (Z - End)

  • Vegeta (Z - End), Super Saiyan

  • Vegeta (Z - End), Super Saiyan 2

  • Majin Vegeta

  • Vegeta (Super)

  • Vegeta (Super), Super Saiyan

  • Vegeta (Super), Super Saiyan God

  • Vegeta (Super), Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan

For those not wanting to count them up, that’s 11 Gokus and 13 Vegetas, and we haven’t even gotten into the Vegitos and Gogetas yet. Thankfully, it looks like there’s going to be quite a large roster in Sparking! Zero, and we’ve already seen glimpses at other characters, so we don’t have to worry too much that it’ll be entirely Goku and Vegeta.

No release date has been announced for Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero yet, but it’s said to be releasing on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
