Dr. Pimple Popper needs no introduction. Even if you can't stomach the dermatologist's YouTube videos of blackhead extractions, cyst popping, and pimple poking, you probably know of them. Dr. Pimple Popper—who's actually Sandra Lee, M.D., a dermatologist based in Upland, CA—has 2.3 million YouTube subscribers and counting. Evidence of her popularity: When we last wrote about the phenomenon last November, she had 1.8 million followers. The appeal of these videos, in case you, like me, just don't get it, is that they're both thrilling—in the same way as a horror movie—and soothing. Lee says that watching them has helped her patients fall asleep.
But let's get to what Dr. Lee does for the people who actually star in the videos: She treats their pimples and blackheads. If an actual visit to Dr. Lee's Upland, CA-based office doesn't happen to be in your future, you can now make do with her new skin care line. It was the next obvious step for the derm, since she released her spot treatment last October. The new line is called SLMD, and it contains six products: the Acne Cleanser ($18), an Acne Lotion with Benzoyl Peroxide ($30) for daytime, a Clarifying Treatment with Retinol ($30) for nighttime, the Daily Moisturizer ($25), the Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 ($25), and, of course, the Acne Spot Treatment ($20).
SLMD is also offering two starter kits: A 30-day trial ($45) as well as a Standard Set ($80), which gives you just enough products for 60 days of zit-zapping. We love that she's offering a moisturizer with sun protection—which is key if you're using retinol on a nightly basis, since that ingredient leaves your skin more vulnerable to sun damage—and that you don't have to sort through a million products to figure out exactly what you need. According to Lee, she recommends these products (and, more importantly, the ingredients in them) to her patients.
Even though we never see the flawless, clear skin that results from an appointment with Dr. Lee, we imagine we'll be able to get them for ourselves with this line.
