First Lady Dr. Jill Biden is on a five-day trip of Romania and Slovakia, where she is meeting with refugee Ukrainian families and U.S. service members.

On Mother’s Day, Dr. Biden will spend the holiday with Ukrainian mothers and children in Kosice and Vysne Nemecke, Slovakia, who have been forced to flee Ukraine due to the Russian invasion. According to the U.N. refugee agency, in the past two months, about 5.5 million people have left Ukraine.

On Sunday, she will also meet with local Slovaks who are supporting Ukrainian families "who have sought refuge in Slovakia during this crisis," per the White House.

This is not Dr. Biden's first show of solidarity with Ukrainian families. At the State of the Union address in March, her dress paid tribute to the nation—she had a sunflower embroidered onto the sleeve. Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine, and have become a symbol of solidarity in light of the Russian invasion. The First Lady has also been spotted wearing a sunflower mask.

Dr. Biden has also taken to her official social media channels to share messages about Ukraine, including tweeting on International Women's Day, "To our sisters from Ukraine who are fighting to keep their country free and their families alive: We stand with you in solidarity. To our sisters in Russia who are protesting and speaking out against the invasion at great personal risk: We see your courage."

She wrote in late March, "We stand with Ukraine and we’re praying for their families," adding a sunflower emoji.
