MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — A picture is worth a thousand words, and downtown Madison is about to have two brand new murals both with unique, personal messages to the city.

“The town Madison mural we want children to connect with their local history that’s one of the goals of this mural,” said Madison Visionary Partners Executive Director Melanie Thornton.

Sonya Clemons, an artist from Scottsboro, is known for her historic murals, and she brought that and her paintbrush to the mural between Main and Martin Street.

“I just took the information that the local historian gave me I looked online for local facts about Madison and I took all of that put it together and just did one of my kind of trademark…history murals,” said Clemons.

“One of the things we’ve just seen in the industry over the years is that children aren’t connecting with their local history and we just felt like it was really important that they do take back a piece of the founding of their town,” said Thornton.

Now, this is not the only mural being painted in downtown Madison.
There is another one a couple hundred feet away, with a unique design paying tribute to something very special in the city of Madison”.”

The other mural, outside the honest coffee roasters, is blossoming with butterflies.

If you didn’t know, Madison rests right on the migration path of monarch butterflies which is why they are the centerpiece of this mural.

“I wanted to do something that showed the local plants that monarchs are supported by…then to show the whole sort of life cycle from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to flourishing to think of the way these beautiful butterflies enhance our city,” said Ann Moeller, artist painting the monarch mural.

Artist Ann Moeller was born and raised in Madison County making this art project very meaningful to her.

“This is something that is for everyone and I believe art is for everyone so I’m excited to get to contribute something to our community,” said Moeller.
