[There are major spoilers ahead for Downton Abbey: A New Era. Proceed with caution if you haven't seen the film yet!]

The new Downton Abbey film, Downton Abbey: A New Era, is exactly what fans of the series have grown to love (and expect). It has drama, a little bit of scandal, incredible locations, and most importantly, Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham. The new movie follows two major plotlines: Lady Mary stays at Downton to supervise the filming of a movie on the property, and the rest of the family heads to the South of France to investigate a property the Dowager inherited. And that's all great and the movie is very, very fun, but the thing that fans will be the most worked up about happens at the very end.

As a quick refresher, at the end of the first movie, Lady Violet got a mysterious diagnosis and she told Lady Mary she didn't have much time to live. It's a bit surprising that Smith even returned for the second movie, but it makes sense that this sequel would culminate with her death. She is, after all, the central force of the show. But longtime fans of the show are devastated, naturally.

Based on this tweet, I think someone might be rioting right now:

While there isn't any confirmation that there will be a third Downton movie, it's safe to say that even if there is, Lady Violet will not be returning, which means we won't get any more GIFS like this:

And that's the biggest lost of all, TBH.
