Hot of the press, Dove Cameron is Byrdie's latest cover star. The singer, actor and fashion provocateur brought her signature edgy vibe to the photoshoot in a selection of fall's coolest looks, colorful makeup moments, and—our personal favorite—abstract oyster nails.

One look at Cameron's Instagram shows she's no stranger to avant-garde fashion or beauty moments—wearing everything from glitter cat eyeliner to a yellow ombré bob, spiky nails, and, of course, her signature jet black hair, which is a far cry from the bleach-blonde strands of her Disney Channel days.

In the photoshoot, Cameron stayed true to this aesthetic—posing in electric blue eyeshadow, jet-black lipstick, spiky spider lashes, chrome eyeshadow, and safety pin hair clips as she wore looks from NYC It-designer Dion Lee, and iconic brands like Versace, Marc Jacobs, Fendi, and more.

On top of the pristine makeup by Kale Teter, major hair looks by Jacob Rozenberg, and the otherworldly styling by Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo; the nails by Ashlie Johnson were the throughline through each and every look.

Johnson told Byrdie that "the inspo for this nail look was the oyster nail trend," which she loves because "they are futuristic but also really beautiful, like pieces of jewelry."

Though not every nail was exactly the same, they all had a similar aquatic pearlescent design to them—with winding silver shapes, clear dewdrops, and, of course, shimmer. Some of the nails were more covered in the molten-silver moment, others had a more faint rendition—but all of them had the swirling designs on top of a milky white "your nails but better" base.

For such a complex design, Johnson says the "key products on set were pretty minimal," as she actually made the nails ahead of time using Aprés full cover tips.

Though this look requires someone as skilled as Johnson to create the sea-inspired shapes, she says, "to get a similar look at home, I would substitute the chrome [powder] with silver polish, and instead of the glass bubbles, I'd use an iridescent polish."

So, instead of applying the products to a press-on nail like Johnson did for the shoot, start by prepping your nails as you would for any other manicure. After, use a pearlescent polish like OPI's Kyoto Pearl Nail Lacquer ($12). Then you can build the oyster swirls and dew drops with silver nail stickers, or by swirling on your favorite silver polish with a super thin nail brush.
