Dove Cameron Posted a Braless Selfie
Dove Cameron knows how to make a statement with her choice of fashion. After recently encouraging sustainability on the red carpet, the Descendants star took to Instagram to share her support for going braless.
On Tuesday, August 13, Dove shared two selfies of herself wearing a white tank. Choosing not to wear a bra, a fashion choice which is always someone’s right, the actor posted a message from the book Singing Woman: Voices of the Sacred Feminine that presumably explained her wardrobe decision. For her first quote from the book, she wrote, “Women HAVE a history that has been systematically suppressed. Our collective spirituality has largely been tainted to fit the needs of men and those in power. This has a profound effect on the self-esteem of girls and the women they become. This influence can be seen in their life choices, partners and financial security for the rest of their lives. It also has an effect on the way their future partners will view them - and ultimately treat them. Our girls deserve better.”
She then posted another selfie from a distance and chose the quote, “This is the age of the ascendant Feminine Principle. In such times as these, women are able to look at themselves with new concepts of value and brilliance. However you inhabit and express being Woman, embrace yourself in that way today!”
Some of Dove’s followers went on to share their admiration for the star’s stylish statement, writing, “I’m proud to say you are my role model because you’re always so positive and you stand up for what’s right,” and “She doesn’t need to be told what to wear. She can wear what she wants.” Others fought back against those in the comments who wished to leave negative remarks, writing, “There is no reason at all that you should be ashamed of your body or yourself.”
Her followers make a valid and important point, as, ultimately, whether someone chooses to wear a bra, or chooses to wear any means of fashion, remains up to them. And as Teen Vogue previously explored, wearing a bra is a choice, and it’s perfectly fine to wear one, and it’s also fine to choose not to wear one.
