The only real makeup rule worth following, summer or not, is that if it makes you feel good, you'll also look good. And that ethos can apply to your summer eyeshadow look, too, which might explain why dopamine glam is taking the beauty world by storm, according to celebrity makeup artist Sir John.

Similar to the concept of dopamine dressing, which posits that wearing a wardrobe you love can trigger the feel-good hormone, dopamine, dopamine glam offers a similar hypothesis — that in wearing an eyeshadow look you love, you'll enjoy a mood lift. Think: bold, bright hues, shimmery finishes, and colorful eyeliner that draw attention to the eyes.

Ahead, everything you need to know about the summer eyeshadow look about the flood your social feed.

Dopamine Glam, Explained

Move over, no-makeup makeup. If you're a maximalist at heart and are here for the drama — in the best way possible — then dopamine glam is worth incorporating into your summer makeup look. And you'll be in good company. "We are seeing a resurgence of bold, expressive looks, versus the simple, bare-skin makeup styles that have dominated our timelines and feeds for a bit," says Sir John.

His prediction: "We’re going to see unorthodox ways of using eyeshadows and liners — think washes of color and sculpted and lifted eyes," he says, adding that beauty is a feeling. As a result, dopamine glam is prime to be a guiding force for summer makeup.

How To Get The Look

There isn't really a set technique to get dopamine glam, according to Sir John — and that's part of the fun. But if you are looking for some sort of guidance, start by finding ways to lift and define the eye: First, use your eyeshadow of choice to sculpt and elongate the eyes; he's a fan of CTZN Cosmetics Eye Element Eyeshadow Stick to set your base shade.

Then, layer in washes of color and playful liner strokes to get a pop of color and bold look. You can work in other eyeshadow colors or use a gel eyeliner like MAC Cosmetics Colour Excess Gel Pencil, which has bold pigment and won't budge. Finally, use a brush with short, synthetic bristles to blend out the shades and get a washed effect; try Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow Brush or e.l.f. Cosmetics Eyeshadow "C" Brush.

Ultimately, it's most important to go with whatever pleases you. "It's about looking inward and going with that," Sir John says. He also encourages not saving the big, bright eye-makeup looks for special occasions.

"Whether you’re just hanging out with your girlfriends, attending a barbecue, or getting glammed up to go out, have fun with your makeup," he says. "It’s a great way to set the tone of your day." With that, consider your look set for summer.
