From Good Housekeeping

  • Season 2 of The Mandalorian aired on Disney+ on October 30.

  • A third season of the series is being written and planned, but production may be stalled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian returned to the roster of ongoing Disney+ shows, debuting a second season on October 30, 2020. That incredible season, which wrapped up on December 18, has, not surprisingly, garnered the show a 2021 Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama TV Series. If that wasn't praise enough, the success has lead the way for three spinoffs series: The Book of Boba Fett, Rangers of the New Republic, and Ahsoka.

This, of course, has many people wondering about season 3 of The Mandalorian. Here's what we know so far.

The Mandalorian season 3 is already being planned out.

Season 3 has been in the works well before season 2 even aired. "Sources close to the production have confirmed that creator Jon Favreau has been 'writing season 3 for a while,' and that the art department, led by Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang, has been creating concepts for season 3 for the past few weeks,'" Variety reported back in April 2020.

Favreau himself confirmed on GMA that production for season 3 will start right after The Book of Boba Fett, which is set to air in December 2021.

Of course they'd want to keep it going. Plus, who would deprive the world of more Baby Yoda? (We suppose the guy in the suit who travels around with Baby Yoda has his fans, too.)

No plot details have been announced, but the world will get bigger.

The good and bad thing about The Mandalorian is that the production is adept at keeping secrets. Remember how no one even hinted about the existence of Baby Yoda before he showed up on screen? (That's a really hard feat in this day and age, where you can find spoilers for just about anything.) And even after it was confirmed that Rosario Dawson joined the cast of the show, her character was kept under wraps for a while after that.

It's no surprise, then, that no details about Favreau's vision for season 3 have dribbled out yet. In fact, there's still a lot of secrecy about the current season, even for the actors. Entertainment Weekly reports that "the heightened secrecy included actors getting scripts only for their own episodes and being ushered to sets in black cloaks and hoods like incognito Sith Lords."

We have no hints about the planets the Mando will visit, or any characters that might cross his path. We do have a morsel, via Favreau, that subsequent seasons may go to more far-flung worlds with more characters than was allowed in season 1. "As we introduce other characters, there are opportunities to follow different storylines,” he says in that same Entertainment Weekly story. “The world was really captivated by Game of Thrones and how that evolved as the characters followed different storylines — that's very appealing to me as an audience member.”

Giancarlo Esposito confirmed this universe expansion in an interview with People. "We’re living in a universe that is huge and there’s so much to explore," he tells the magazine. "So I think this show is going to lay the ground work for the depth and breadth that’s gonna come in season 3 and season 4, where you’re really gonna start to get answers." Intriguing!

There is no release date for The Mandalorian season 3.

As stated above, the third season has not yet started production. However, according to the Film and Television Industry Alliance, as of January, the show was in pre-production, with a shoot day aimed for April 5, 2021. That means, we can likely expect the first part of the season 3 to air in early 2022.
