National Donut Day has been celebrated for 85 years, and this year, it falls on Friday, June 2. While many restaurants and bakeries offer sweet deals (more on that later), there's much more to the annual celebration.
During World War I, women volunteering with The Salvation Army went to France to provide support and serve comforting donuts to U.S. soldiers. Then in 1938, during the Great Depression, the first National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago to help those in need and honor the "Donut Lassies" that served during the war.
