Donated Skateboards brings big smiles to disadvantaged 5th graders in Austin Texas

On Sunday, September 10th, dozens of volunteers and workers gathered to help build skateboard setups for the entire 5th-grade class at Pillow Elementary School in north central Austin, TX.

The small local Brewery, Oskar Blues Austin, hosted the event, where their staff and other volunteers built more than 60 skateboard setups that were delivered to the 5th graders the following Monday.

The brewery teamed up with Can’d Aid- a national nonprofit organization- for the skateboard donations, as part of their Treads + Trails program which aims at getting kids to enjoy time outside with a focus on disadvantaged communities. The organization has also worked in underprivileged communities building ramps and providing skate clinics to encourage youth to enjoy their time outdoors.

A local Austin news station, KXAN shed some light on this wonderful community event, check it out!

Brian Ball with Can’d Aid couldn’t have said it better, “It kind of hits those kids that maybe don’t work well with traditional rules… but, there is a community, and there’s definitely, etiquette to it. But also just the social/emotional benefits of skateboarding are incredible.”
