Donald Trump Says Prince Harry "Couldn't Have Been Nicer" When They Met at Buckingham Palace
Ahead of Donald Trump's state visit to the U.K., the president managed to stir up a royal-centric controversy.
In an interview with the Sun, Trump was asked what he thought about Meghan Markle, who had expressed disapproval of him before becoming a royal. Markle had called him "misogynistic," and said she might move to Canada, where her TV show Suits was filmed, if he were elected.
After hearing about Meghan's threat to move north, Trump said, "I didn’t know that. What can I say? I didn’t know that she was nasty."
His words kicked off a debate: did Trump call Meghan's comments "nasty," or Meghan herself a "nasty" person? Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center, weighed in for the Chicago Tribune, noting that it was "difficult to know what he meant"-especially given Trump's history of insulting political opponents.
Now, in a Piers Morgan interview set to air tomorrow, Trump reportedly rebukes claims that he called Meghan "nasty."
"I said she was nasty about me," Trumps says, per the Telegraph. "And essentially I didn’t know she was nasty about me... You know what? She’s doing a good job, I hope she enjoys her life... I think she’s very nice."
He continued, "That’s okay for her to be nasty, it’s not good for me to be nasty to her and I wasn’t…"
Trump also had kind words for Meghan's husband, Prince Harry. In the wake of the controversy, Trump and Harry met during the president's visit to Buckingham Palace. (Notably, Harry would not attend the state banquet with Trump later that evening, but it's not known why. It's entirely possible that baby Archie might have needed him at home.)
"I think he’s a terrific guy," Trump said of Harry. "The Royal Family is really nice... [Prince Harry] spent a lot of time talking to Ivanka and talking to my family. I went up-he couldn’t have been nicer. Couldn’t have been nicer… I think he’s great."
