Donald Trump Just Joked About Impeachment and Melania Leaving Him at a Media-Packed Dinner
On Saturday, President Donald Trump attended the Gridiron dinner in Washington, D.C. It's an insider-y prelude of sorts to April 28's White House Correspondents Association Dinner—so perhaps it's no surprise that he had a lot to say to the members of the media and White House staffers who made up the the white-tie guest list. As at the Correspondents dinner (which Trump skipped last year), the President is expected to not only take a little roasting but dish out a few jokes of his own. His themes for the evening centered around the 2020 elections (and his presumed opponents), DACA, the previous week's chaos at the White House, and of course, the "fake news" media that was assembled for the evening. But a few eyebrows were raised, Variety reports, when his jokes went so far as to include themes of impeachment and Melania leaving him.
When it came to impeachment, he framed it around a mini-roasting of Vice President Mike Pence: "Mike is doing a fantastic job as Vice President. Could not do better. I really am proud to call him The Apprentice.”
“Lately, it bothers me,” Trump continued. “He is showing a particularly keen interest in the news these days. He starts out each morning asking everyone, ‘Has he been impeached yet?’”
But that wasn't the night's most controversial joke. "I like turnover. I like chaos. It really is good," he said, while Melania was on the stage with him. "Now the question everybody keeps asking is, ‘Who is going to be the next to leave? Steve Miller or Melania?’”
The crowd, apparently taken aback, gave a mixed response of laughs and "oohs," reports Variety.
“That’s terrible. That is terrible.” Trump turned to Melania and asked her if she loved him. “I won’t tell you what she said,” he continued, before adding that she'd told him to behave.
It's still TBD whether Trump will attend the more high-profile Correspondents Dinner in April, but after his genuine compliments for the media in attendance, perhaps (very perhaps) his ice has thawed.
