During Donald Trump’s presidency, he spent quite a bit of time on the golf course, playing approximately 261 rounds during his four years in office, according to The Washington Post. That should make him a pretty good golfer, right? Well, sportswriter Rick Reilly believes he knows the secret to the former president’s latest golf wins.

“I’ve always said golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a guy,” Reilly jested during an appearance on Deadline White House with Nicolle Wallace. “And what it reveals about this guy is that he cannot lose. He has to win, and he will do anything to cheat.” That’s a pretty big claim from the Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump author, but he does have firsthand experience in playing 18 holes with Donald Trump — so he has some insight.

“And I know because I played golf with him, and he took seven mulligans. He took a ‘give me chip-in.’ I’ve never even heard of a ‘give me chip-in,'” he shared. Reilly’s allegations went even further, bordering on the absurd, with a story that Donald Trump won a championship even though he wasn’t “in the state when the tournament’s played.” How does this happen? Well, the golf pro shared how he thinks it happens.

“What he does [is] he just calls in and goes, ‘I usually beat that guy, give me the trophy,’” Reilly said. “And I know this because when I play with him, he goes, ‘You know what I do to win these championships, don’t ya?’ and I go, ‘Please tell me. Give it to me.’ And he goes, ‘Anytime I buy a new course, I play the first round all by myself and then I declare myself the club champion.’ So that’s what kind of guy this is.” Well, that’s one way to win. Reilly believes that Donald Trump has only won golf championships at his own courses, never anywhere else.

Reilly’s Donald Trump cheating story feels eerily similar to tales that PGA golfers Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson shared. Of course, the former president’s spokesman Steven Cheung told People that none of this is true in an oddly phrased statement. “Rick fantasizes about having a golf game as good as President Trump. But instead of putting in the hard work to improve his s—ty game, Rick allows his severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome to completely take over his life. He should seek urgent medical care before it’s too late.”
