Donald Trump Announces He's Running for President Again

Former president Donald Trump is hoping to drop the "former" title. Last night, at Mar-a-Lago, Trump announced he is running for president again in 2024.

"In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States," Trump said.

In July, Trump told New York Magazine, "I feel very confident that, if I decide to run, I’ll win."

At this point it's unclear if other Republicans will challenge Trump for the nomination. One likely name is Florida governor Ron DeSantis, whom Trump previously endorsed—though he has yet to announce a run. Other possibilities include former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Arkansas senator Tom Cotton, among others.

Pence, in response to Trump's 2024 bid, said, "I think we’ll have better choices."

Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden. Biden brought in 7 million more votes than Trump, propelling a win with 306 electoral college votes to Trump's 232 votes. Trump, however, disputed the results and attempted to overturn the election. On January 6, 2021, he urged his supporters to march to the Capitol, resulting in the mob violence that occurred there.

In October, at a rally in Texas, he amplified false claims of election fraud, saying, "I ran twice. I won twice. I did much better the second time than I did before. And now in order to make our country successful, safe and glorious again, I will probably have to do it again."

Trump is the only president to be impeached twice. In 2019, he was impeached for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress; in January 2021, he was impeached for incitement of insurrection. He was acquitted by the Senate both times. He's currently facing civil and criminal investigations in New York, Georgia, and Washington D.C.

President Joe Biden is widely expected to seek reelection.
