Donald Glover Is at the Emmys in Costume as Teddy Perkins
Wondering who the man in the red smoking jacket was at the 2018 Emmys? It might not be who you think— it’s celebrated multi-hyphenate Donald Glover, but it's Glover as Teddy Perkins, the title character from his cinematic episode of Atlanta. Seated in the front row, Perkins gave Bill Hader a hug as he took the stage to accept his award for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Barry. Which means that we very narrowly missed out on Glover accepting the award live as Perkins, which would have been . . . something.
“Teddy Perkins” aired in April to critical acclaim—it features a character named Teddy Perkins who is a millionaire intending to turn his creepy mansion into a museum. The episode, which aired with no commercial breaks, has a horror element, and Hiro Murai (who directed Glover's video for “This Is America” directed, and was nominated for it at the awards along with Glover.
Needless to say the Internet was surprised to see Perkins in the audience; but, knowing that Glover supposedly staying in costume and makeup and character during the filming of the whole episode on set, it's a little more expected from the idiosyncratic show creator.
