JFK’s Inauguration Watch Is Going on Display in N.Y.C. This Fall

This fall, three very special experiences are headed to New York City. First, the GPHG just opened its exhibition of this year’s nominees for the Academy Awards of watchmaking at Watches of Switzerland’s Soho flagship, which will run through October 21. Then, opening on November 3 and running through November 22, Jaeger-LeCoultre brings its “Reverso Stories” exhibition to the Big Apple. Less than a week later on November 9, Omega will launch its Planet Omega exhibition in NYC for only ten days through November 19.

On Wednesday, Watches of Switzerland welcomed the full lineup of this year’s GPHG nominees across all 15 categories to its Soho flagship. The occasion marks the first time the entire selection of nominees is put on display for the public, as opposed to just the winning watches following the awards. New York City is the fourth destination on the global tour. The exhibition has already made stops in Macao, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. After the Big Apple, it will continue on to Geneva, Dubai and Zurich ahead of the award ceremony at the Théâtre du Léman in Geneva on November 9.

Just ahead of the grand opening of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new flagship boutique on Madison Avenue, the brand will bring its “Reverso Stories” retrospective to the heart of N.Y.C. at Iron23. Here, you’ll discover the rich history of one of the most instantly recognizable watch designs ever made through four key themes: the story of an icon, style and design, innovation, and craftsmanship.

Alongside historic timepieces, the exhibits will include the newest Reverso models that debuted earlier this year at Watches and Wonders. In addition, two exceptional new Reverso Tribute Enamel models will be launched during the New York “Reverso Stories” exhibition. Still, the most unexpected element of the “Reverso Stories” showcase is acclaimed Korean digital media artist Yiyun Kang’s Origin, which Jaeger-LeCoultre specially commissioned under its Made of Makers program. This multimedia installation explores the Golden Ratio, a principle that has guided the design of the Reverso since its inception in 1931.

Next stop: Planet Omega. Beginning November 9, head down to the Chelsea Factory to immerse yourself in Omega’s rich, 175-year history. This exhibition is organized into five categories demonstrating Omega’s breadth of watchmaking prowess: sports, the Olympic Games, the ocean, James Bond, and, of course, outer space.

Throughout each of the areas, there will be some incredible watches on display, from one of the original split-second chronographs used to time the Olympic Games in 1932 to an original 1932 Marine (the first divers’ watch available to civilian divers) and the Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition from Daniel Craig’s final appearance as 007 in No Time to Die. Of course, no Omega retrospective would be complete without the Moonwatch, like the same CK2998 model worn by astronaut Wally Schirra in 1962 aboard Mercury’s Sigma 7 mission. In addition, several other notable Omega watches will be on display, including the first Ladymatic from 1955, Elvis Presley’s blinged-out Omega featuring 44 brilliant-cut diamonds, and the Omega Slimline worn by John F. Kennedy at his presidential inauguration in 1961.

The GPHG nominees will be on display at the Watches of Switzerland Soho Flagship located at 60 Greene Street through October 21, and appointments are encouraged. Planet Omega will run from November 9-19 from 11-7 daily at the Chelsea Factory, located at 547 W 26th Street. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s “Reverso Stories” will run from November 3-22 at Iron23, located at 29 West 23rd Street in Nomad. While no appointment is required to attend, you can book special experiences during the exhibition directly on Jaeger-LeCoultre’s website. “Reverso Stories” will be closed on Mondays. However, you can visit Tuesday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
