Dip is a snack food that connects us all, whether we’re standing around a grazing board dipping crackers in a creamy concoction or sharing an order of chips and queso at our favorite restaurant. When it comes to my favorite types of dip, I’ve learned the creamier and more decadent, the better—so when I came across a dip that contains an entire stick of butter, I had to try it.

In a TikTok video that’s been viewed more than 13 million times, barbecue enthusiast Malcom Reed shares his "Don’t Tell the Doctor" Dip, a cream cheese-based dish that includes some surprising ingredients. Included in Reed’s mix are: an entire stick of butter and a whole package of bacon—which I knew guaranteed a delicious dipping experience.

“Everybody wants this recipe,” Reed says in his viral post. “The hardest part is waiting to try it.”

What Is Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip?

Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip is a creamy, scoopable recipe made up of simple ingredients that, when combined, pack some really delicious flavors. It gets its name from the whole block of cream cheese, whole stick of butter, pound of bacon, and more, that go into it. While this makes it rich, hearty, and irresistible, it might get a side-eye from your primary care physician. Despite the clever name, there's no need to have any guilt about enjoying this dip in moderation.

The best part is that when I tried making this dish to bring to a gathering recently, I found that many of the ingredients were already in my refrigerator or pantry.

The ingredients list for Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip is as follows:

  • 1 block softened cream cheese

  • 1 stick softened butter

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise (Malcom calls for an “eyeballed” amount in the video)

  • 1 (1-pound) package of bacon (cooked crisp and crumbled),

  • 8-ounce bag of shredded Cheddar cheese

  • 1 packet ranch seasoning

  • chopped green onions

To make the dip, mix the softened cream cheese and butter until combined. Next, mix in the sour cream and mayonnaise, followed by crispy, chopped bacon. Be sure to save a little bacon to add to the top of the dip for garnish.

Then mix in shredded Cheddar, chopped green onions (again, save a few for garnish), and a packet of ranch seasoning. Once all of the ingredients are stirred together well, put the dip in the refrigerator for about an hour to allow the flavors to meld and develop. When you pull it out, top the dip with some bacon and green onion pieces.

What Does Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip Taste Like?

Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip was a big hit at the party I took it to. The biggest fans were those who really love ranch dressing, as the ranch seasoning packet really adds to the overall flavor. The dip is cool and creamy, thanks to ingredients like sour cream and cream cheese, and has big umami elements from the bacon, shredded cheese, and green onion.

I’d describe the dip as really flavorful cream cheese, as it felt reminiscent of jalapeño popper filling. The stick of butter made the dip more decadent and heavy, but there wasn’t a strong buttery flavor.

How to Serve Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip

I served my Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip on a grazing board with crackers, sliced ham, pecans, and sweet pickles. The spread was a huge hit, with party guests noshing on it before and after the main meal. Many asked me what was in the dip or how I made it, and when I explained that it was a viral TikTok recipe, they agreed they could see why it was so popular.

Reed dipped crunchy corn chips into his version of the dip. From potato chips to cucumber slices, there really isn’t a savory snack you couldn’t try dipping into this tasty appetizer.

How to Store Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip Leftovers

Reed’s recipe makes quite a bit of dip. In fact, even for a party with about 20 guests, there were plenty of leftovers. Especially if you bulk the appetizer up with plenty of items for dipping, there is sure to be some dip left over for the next day.

Still, because the dip is dairy-based, it’s a good idea not to keep it for more than three or four days in the refrigerator in an airtight container. The good news? Don’t Tell the Doctor Dip is so delicious, you’ll finish it off way before then (and your secret will be safe with us).
