Domino's New Feature Lets You Order Pizza to the Beach, Ball Game, or Even Camping—But Does It Work?

Let's see if this new feature really "delivers."

If I’m getting takeout, there’s a good chance I'm getting pizza. And if I decide that I want it delivered instead of walking to the joint down the street, there’s a solid chance I’m getting Domino’s.

And while I am truly a Domino’s delivery fan (I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a sucker for its tracker—seeing the tracker update from “quality check” to “out for delivery” gives me utter joy), I’m a bit skeptical about its newest feature: Domino’s Pinpoint Delivery.

With Pinpoint Delivery, you can drop a pin on a map almost anywhere, and your delivery driver will meet you there, with no exact address needed. According to Domino's press release, it’s "a new technology that allows customers to receive a delivery nearly anywhere, including places like parks, baseball fields and beaches, just in time for the start of summer."

I’m all for convenience, but I wanted to take a closer look at how it works and test out if you really could order it almost anywhere.

How Domino’s Pinpoint Delivery Works

First, you have to make pinpoint delivery orders through the Domino’s app, not its website. After you drop a pin, Domino’s drops a second pin at the nearest safe pickup spot where you can meet your driver.

From there, you can place your order. For pinpoint delivery, you need to prepay, provide the phone number of the phone you order from, and give a brief physical description to help your driver locate you at your pickup spot.

After your order goes through, you’ll get an estimated delivery time like you would with a standard delivery, as well as directions to your pickup location. You can track your driver’s GPS location and sign up for text updates so you know when to meet them. Once they arrive at the pickup location, you have four minutes to meet them.

Will Domino’s Pinpoint Delivery Work Everywhere?

That’s a resounding no. Pinpoint delivery will only work if the pin is dropped within the closest Domino’s delivery zone. If you’re at a park near home and you know it’s close to your usual Domino’s location, you’ll probably be fine. But more remote areas? You’re most likely out of luck. It’s probably a good idea to check on the app ahead of time if you’re able.

(Fun fact: If you’re exploring different parks at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, you won’t be able to use this service in Epcot, but if you’ve got a hankering for pizza in Animal Kingdom and only Domino’s will do, you should be able to order.)

Is Domino’s Pinpoint Delivery Worth It?

Ehhh, kind of? If you’re going to your local beach that already happens to be in a Domino’s delivery zone, sure. But in my case, I’m a little skeptical that the pin I dropped at my local beach is under a four-minute walk from the pickup location that the app suggested. And once you place your order, you can’t adjust your pickup location.

The bottom line: If you’re hanging out having a picnic or watching your kids’ baseball tournament this summer and don’t have an exact location address, give it a try. I’ll probably save my pizza for home delivery.
